Historically found on rocky cliffs, but now they are most frequently found on man-made structures such as buildings and bridges. Will reuse nests of other birds or simply lay eggs on bare steel because they do not build their own, but nest failure is often high at these sites.
Threats to Survival
Historically, DDT wiped out all but one nesting population of the species east of the Mississippi river until it was banned in 1972.
