Amphidromous (breed in freshwater but enter saltwater habitats during their life). Mostly riverine in Massachusetts, but are present in estuaries and the coast during the winter. Rivers are typically fast-flowing and rocky, with areas with aquatic vegetation to feed.

Habitat degradation or loss and mortality are the main threats which can be manifested through damns, bridge construction, channel dredging and pollution.
