Species Name: Ferrissia walkeri
Species Distribution in Massachusetts
Federal Rank: None
Massachusetts State Rank: Special Concern
Little is known. Has been found in a freshwater lake and pond characterized by exceptionally clear water, high sodium levels, low calcium content and the absence of other snail species. However, in the other site it was found it was a muddy-bottomed pond and slow stream. Associated with a variety of substrates, including rocks, glass bottles, tin cans and water lilies.
Threats to Survival
Threatened by organic pollution, pesticides and other chemical contaminants. Other snails are also vulnerable to sudden changes in the water level, and dams can limit dispersal.
Actions Recommended to Ensure Survival
Avoiding, mitigating, or eliminating organic and chemical pollution of freshwater ponds; avoiding sudden changes in water level which might desiccate limpets and removing barriers to dispersal.
